Basics[]

Chatrang is a game developed in Persia and intended principally to be a wargame simulator for elite men and women who wish to study military science. The game consists of a green and black checked board with eight rows and eight columns, each player having 16 pieces to move. The goal is to put the opponent's Shah in a position where it will be inevitably killed on one's next turn, to capture all pieces but the opponent's Shah, or to make the opponent unable to make legal moves on his or her turn. To do so is to win. The only draw condition is if one player captures his/her opponent's last non-Shah piece and his/her opponent can do likewise on the successive turn.
